Mary Kathleen "Kathy" DeLange, a devoted mother, wife, passionate community volunteer and activist, passed away on February 24, surrounded by her family in her Houston home after a brief and courageous battle with ALS.
Kathy was preceded in death by her mother and father, Stella Juanita and Welcome Forrest Mahaffey.
She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Walter DeLange; daughter, Jennifer DeLange and husband Joel Szulc; son, Adam DeLange and wife Lori; and her four adoring grandchildren: Veronica, Caroline, Ashley and Nathan. She is also survived by her sister Emily Brannon and husband David; brother, William Mahaffey and wife Becky; and her nieces Jessica, Courtney, Lori, and Kelli, as well as her beloved schnauzer, Albert.
Kathy was born on May 14, 1943 in Commerce, Texas and graduated from Bishop High School in 1961. She graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Psychology in 1965, and later with a Masters Degree, also in Psychology. She was a certified psychological associate and licensed family therapist.
Kathy began her career at the New Mexico State Psychiatric Hospital, and then worked for Dallas Independent School District as a school psychologist. She later moved to Houston, and worked for the Houston Child Guidance Center, where she met her husband, Walter. She later spent several years with the Harris County of Education as a special education counselor for several school districts in the county.
Kathy's main focus and energy was always on her family and her community. During her children's school years, she was a constant volunteer and leader (serving as president of PTO at Poe Elementary School, Lanier Middle School, and Lamar High School), and serving on various HISD committees. Always an effective advocate for her children and all children, she supported many neighborhood improvement projects, and served on the Board of Directors of the Boulevard Oaks Civic Association, and was a longtime member of the Boulevard Oaks Ladies Club.
Kathy will be remembered as a proud Texas Democrat; she worked tirelessly to support the causes she believed in, and she was thrilled to be chosen as an alternate Delegate to the Democratic State Convention in 2008.
Kathy had an infectious enthusiasm and zest for life that made life fun for everyone around her. She was everybody's favorite mom, and her laughter is something we will always remember.
Family and friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday, February 28 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Joseph J. Earthman Generations, 234 Westcott Street.
A funeral service honoring the life of Kathy DeLange will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1, at Covenant Church, 4949 Caroline Street.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Kathy's name to Poe Cooperative Nursery School, P. O. Box 981012, Houston, Texas 77098 or the Texas Democratic Party.
